Removador Recordings and Solutions Releases Debut Album by Lydia Burrell

Removador Recordings and Solutions, the record label co-founded by My Morning Jacket frontman Yim Yames and former MMJ guitarist Johnny Quaid, has just released “Lydia Burrell”, the debut effort from producer Alexander Smith under the moniker Lydia Burrell. The album is a juxtaposition of richly detailed electronic production and his earnest voice. Aside from recording and production assistance from Yames and another friend, Ben Mundane, the collection of songs is a DIY affair, entirely the product of Smith’s creation.

Smith had been writing and performing music since high school. His interests led him eventually to pursue a masters degree in music theory and composition from University of Louisville. Taking the name from a character in an abandoned screen play, Smith eventually chose “Lydia Burrell” as his musical persona when he began experimenting with electronic music. The unique influences of Smith’s life are felt in the music. He has spent the last eight years building, tuning, and maintaining church pipe organs. “It’s stimulating to work with your hands and satisfying to play a part in how an enormous and complex instrument sounds,” says Smith. “I think it’s helped me to understand and appreciate the craftsmanship and process of building things.”

“Lydia Burrell” reflects the complexity of the organs Smith tunes. He calls the recording process a “trial and error” affair, the creation of an amalgam of sounds that eventually carves itself into song. Tracks such as “Lostma” and “Space (Never Enough Time)” build layer upon layer of industrial electronica, only to reveal a haunting melody hidden underneath. “Ring” showcases a songwriter using a gift for pop to establish that this is ultimately a record of loss and heartbreak. Smith notes, “it’s a product of that weird feeling of limbo when one thing that you were consumed with ends, and then you find you’re waiting for something else, even though you’re just back where you were.” It’s a great metaphor for the record… Finish the album at “Everything” then begin again with “Noiseamber,” discovering more in each song upon every listen.

Follow the Train Releases Mercury

Louisville, KY natives Follow the Train have revealed their shimmering new album Mercury, a lushly detailed collection of music that is packed with ideas and brimming with emotion at every corner. Produced by Kevin Ratterman (VHS or Beta), the album is available today through Removador Recordings and Solutions, the label run by My Morning Jacket frontman Yim Yames and former My Morning Jacket guitarist Johnny Quaid.

Follow the Train began in 2004 as Dennis Sheridan’s solo musical project, paying tribute to the shoe-gaze of the late 80s and early 90s. The project found an audience with the self-released EP, The Great Disturbance, followed by a full-length album called A Breath Of Sigh. Sheridan eventually found an ear in his longtime friend Yames, who brought Follow The Train to Removador.

The band moved through a few different ensembles before settling on a six-piece group that came together for the new album. Sheridan is joined by James Hewett (drums), Mike Sabo (guitars), Brandon Jones (percussion), Carlos Ramos (bass) and David Cronin (keyboards).

Mercury has emerged as a nine-song, space-maddening, psychedelic, operatic brain-cookie. At the center is Dennis Sheridan’s beautifully tattered yet commanding voice, which carves out a trail in the sky and bursts with lyrics that yearn for exploration.

The Ravenna Colt’s “Slight Spell” Now Available At Removador

After conceiving the project over a decade ago, former My Morning Jacket guitarist Johnny Quaid is finally releasing the dreamlike, southern-flavored debut effort by The Ravenna Colt. The album, titled , Slight Spell, is now available through Removador Recordings and Solutions, the label Quaid recently co-founded with MMJ frontman Yim Yames.

After six years as a part of MMJ, Louisville, KY native Quaid parted amicably with the band in 2004 and headed off to California. Eventually Quaid headed back east and reacquainting himself with his roots. Fittingly, the music he has written as The Ravenna Colt reflects his style of Americana with a hint of cosmic breeze that emanates from California.

Opening track “South of Ohio,” points to this when Quaid wonders “I lost my drawl in California / was there ever one at all?” He reveals himself to be an individual who meditates on the deep connection he has with his hometown as well as one interested in venturing outward for new experiences.

The Ravenna Colt currently includes Phil Carlson, J. Brent Stuart and Daniel T. Mohler as members, but the group has always been a shape-shifting entity with the only constant force being Quaid at the helm. This collective-like quality translates to the music as well, which has beautifully amorphous feel. The songs on Slight Spell have definitive cores, but ones that seem capable of adapting to various musicians and arrangements. Quaid has the soul of a troubadour. One can picture him with nothing but an acoustic guitar strapped to his back, traveling from town to town to share his music and his adventures.

Cortney Tidwell’s Second Album, “Boys”, is Now Available

“Cortney Tidwell’s second album, “Boys”, is named for her two children, her husband, and her musical collaborators. Co-produced by her husband Todd Tidwell, band member Ryan Norris, and Cortney herself, and featuring a duet with Yim Yames (Being Crosby), it pushes back boundaries. It’s an unlikely and unworldly mix, flowing effortlessly from Solid State’s immaculate equilibrium to the krautrock-inspired Seventeen Horses, and from the John Hughes-esque nostalgia of So We Sing to the homespun R&B-influenced Bad News. There’s also the starry-eyed majesty of Palace and the touching innocence of Oh, China, while the archly titled Being Crosby sounds like Joni Mitchell and David Crosby calling to one another across Laurel Canyon. Watusii, on the other hand, offers an icy sparkle that hides a pumping heart and a hook that could land an oil tanker, and Oh, Suicide succeeds in not only breaking your heart but also sending you straight back to the album’s start once again. Purchase and download Cortney Tidwell’s “Boys” today at Removador Recordings And Solutions.
